The Gap Between a Good Design and a Good Printed Label

Screens lie to designers. A colour glows on a monitor because light shines through it, while a printed label only reflects whatever light happens to hit it in a shop. That difference alone explains most of the disappointment people feel when custom labels arrive and look duller than the file they approved. The design was fine. The translation was not. Something similar happens with detail, texture and size, and nobody warns you.

So the gap is not about talent. Some beautiful artwork produces poor custom labels, and some plain artwork prints brilliantly. What separates them is whether the designer considered ink, stock, and physical scale when making decisions, or only how the file looked at 200 per cent zoom.

Why Screen Colour and Printed Colour Never Quite Match

Monitors build colour from red, green and blue light. Printing builds it from cyan, magenta, yellow and black ink.

Some screen colours have no ink equivalent. Bright electric blues, neon greens and hot corals tend to arrive quieter than expected.

Here is why that matters for shelf presence. If your brand colour sits outside the printable range, every printed item you ever produce will look slightly off-brand next to your website.

Test it early. Convert your artwork to CMYK in your design software before approving anything, and see what shifts.

The Stock Underneath Changes Everything You Print

Ink behaves differently depending on what it lands on.

Uncoated paper absorbs ink. Colours soften, edges spread a fraction, and the whole label takes on a matte, natural character. Lovely for honey, coffee and anything positioned as handmade.

Coated paper holds ink on the surface. Colours stay brighter, and detail stays crisper.

Polypropylene gives you a smooth, non-absorbent surface with strong colour, plus water resistance for drinks and cosmetics. A gin bottle in an ice bucket needs that. A bag of coffee does not.

Metallic silver stock adds another variable. Anything printed over it picks up reflectivity, so a pale yellow becomes gold and a light grey turns pewter. White ink isn’t available on reflective areas, which means unprinted parts stay silver.

Small Text and Fine Detail Rarely Survive the Shrink

Designers work at 400% zoom. Customers see the label at actual size, often from a metre away.

A hairline rule that looks elegant on screen can break up when printed at 0.2pt. Reversed text, meaning white type sitting inside a dark block, thickens slightly as ink spreads into the gaps.

Some practical limits worth keeping in mind:

  • Keep body text at 6pt minimum; use larger sizes for reversed type.
  • Avoid lines thinner than 0.25pt
  • Give reversed text a heavier weight than you think it needs
  • Watch serif fonts at small sizes, since the thin strokes vanish first.

Print your artwork at real size on any office printer and pin it to a bottle. Crude, but it reveals problems instantly.

Curves, Shoulders and the Physics of a Bottle

Flat artwork meets round objects, and things move.

A long rectangular label wrapping a narrow bottle hides its own edges. Whatever sits in the outer 15mm becomes invisible from the front, so your logo needs to live centrally.

Tapered containers cause wrinkling. The label wants to lie flat while the surface curves in two directions at once.

Text set close to the trim line looks fine on a screen and looks like a mistake on a bottle. Leave a margin of at least 3mm, more if you can spare it.

What Actually Goes Wrong with Uploaded Artwork

Plenty of good design never reaches its potential because of file setup. Let’s break it down.

  • Images pulled from a website at 72dpi, then scaled up, producing soft edges.
  • Fonts left live instead of outlined, so substitutions creep in
  • Bleed missing, leaving thin white slivers along the trim.
  • RGB files converted automatically at the last moment, with no chance to check the shift
  • Transparency effects that flatten unpredictably

None of these is design failures. They are handover failures, and you can avoid them in about twenty minutes of file preparation.

Judging a Proof Properly Before You Approve It

Reviewing a proof on a laptop tells you very little about the finished result. This is where most Sydney businesses lose their chance to catch problems.

Check the things a screen can actually confirm. Spelling, ingredient accuracy, barcode numbers, volume statements, allergen text.

For anything physical, order a sample kit. Holding real stock in your hand shows you how matte paper handles your brand colour and how polypropylene reflects overhead lighting in a bottle shop.

That sounds like a delay you would rather skip. It costs a few days. Reprinting costs considerably more.

Designing Backwards from the Shelf

The better approach starts at the end. Picture the product where it will actually sit, then work backwards.

Ask what stock suits the conditions. Ask whether your colours survive the ink conversion. Ask what happens to your typography at genuine size on a curved surface.

Answer those questions before the design gets polished, so the printed label matches the idea in your head. Which is really all anyone wants from custom labels in the first place.
